STORIES OF COFFEE

Kava is a relatively new crop in Papua New Guinea, only commercially cultivated since the 1950s. The Sigri plantation was one of the first farms to start growing coffee professionally. It was founded by the famous crocodile hunter (and coffee farmer) Tom Cole and later sold to WR Carpenters. Today it covers 122 hectares and is internationally recognised for its high quality coffee production.

The farm is located at an altitude of around 1525 m in the flat Vagio Valley in the province of Jiuvaca. The Waghi River flows through the valley, whose volcanic soil is rich in nutrients and very fertile, providing ideal conditions for the Jiwaka people to grow tea and coffee as cash crops.
